“Over Our Heads”

We knew that we had our work cut out for us when we decided to tackle a frame-off restoration of a trashed 1952 Mercedes 170DS.  After finishing the the bodywork and paint, and installing the drive train, we found ourselves wondering exactly how to go about re-creating an original, but “high-end” interior.

We toyed with doing it ourselves, but soon realized that we were in over our heads.  We needed everything: the headliner, visors, windlaces, package tray, interior wheel-well covers and door-pillar covers, leather rear bench and front bucket seats, leather door panels, kick panels, trunk liner, and of course, the full set of carpets — including side rails and seat supports.

Fortunately, a mechanic friend of ours recommended Wade Siemens at Toupal’s Upholstery.  Working with Wade was a delight.  We learned more than we ever could have on our own, and we made a friend for life.

Wade helped us decide on just the right materials and styles to make our “new” antique car look even better than the day it first rolled off the Sindelfingen assembly line.  He’s an old-school craftsman who insists on taking the time necessary to do a quality job the right way.
